Here are a few hints regarding selecting the best photographer FOR YOU and advice on what to avoid. Selecting your wedding photographer is a very personal choice and I won’t be at all offended if you decide to go with somebody else. Your photographer is the wedding professional with whom you are likely to spend the most time and who will have the greatest responsibility as you will expect your images to remain in your family for generations. For best results you not only have to like the work but also the photographer as a person.
Familiarity with venue
Some people are concerned about the familiarity of a photographer with their venues. Every wedding presents a whole range of influences that will change the feel of a venue - the most important being you! The amount of times a photographer has worked at your venue is irrelevant as you don’t want ‘production line’ images. The important thing is that they understand your expectations regarding locations photographs. Ask your photographer to visit the venue/s in the days leading up to the event to become familiar with the location/s.
Have a good, hard look at the work
Most photographers take several hundred images at each wedding they photograph so you can imagine how easy it is to put together a few good ones for a website, brochure or bridal fair display. Ask to see complete albums. Check out how they handle the potentially boring but important family shots and consider their work as a complete package.
Be careful with your expectations
Remember that what has been a ‘magical moment’ at someone else’s wedding is unlikely to be the same at yours. You will have your own moments. Even though it is important to make a list of ‘must have’ shots, particularly when it comes to who needs to be in certain images, it is also important to let your photographer have the freedom to be creative. If you expect an exact replica of something you have seen in their studio they will do their best but it is likely you will be disappointed. It will be something you never expected that takes your breath away when you are viewing your proofs.

Trust your Intuition
Do you know the saying – “If it smells like fish, looks like fish, tastes like fish – chances are it’s not chicken”? If alarm bells are ringing early on then it’s a good sign to walk away and check out someone else. The flip side of this is also true – if you like the photographer and his/her work, and the pricing fits into your budget, then they are likely to be the right photographer for you.
Budget
If you really love a photographers work and they are slightly out your budget then discuss this with them. Even if they are unable to move at all on price there my be payment options available to relieve the cashflow pressures that most couples experience before their wedding. For example we encourage couples to select our 'base' Emerald package and allow them to upgrade to a package with an album without penalty right up to the first album planning session which is normally after the honeymoon.
